Preeclampsia

Preeclampsia is most likely to develop in the third trimester of pregnancy. Symptoms of preeclampsia typically starts at the 20th week of pregnancy, it is related with high blood pressure and excess protein in the urine which will result to kidney problems.

Increased blood pressure can damage the mother’s kidney, liver, brain and can be very dangerous to the lives of both mother and the fetus.

SYMPTOMS OF PREECLAMPSIA:

  • vomiting
  • severe headache
  • vision problems
  • severe pain in upper abdomen and shoulder
  • high blood pressure
  • edema
  • rapid heartbeat
  • weight gain (2 pounds a week)
  • lower back pain

 

PREECLAMPSIA USUALLY DEVELOP ON:

  • first time mother
  • 10 year gap between pregnancies
  • women with sister/mother had preeclampsia during their pregnancy
  • women who have body mass index of 30 or more before getting pregnant
  • women who get pregnant at the age of 40 and older

 

PREVENTION:

  • attend regular prenatal appointments
  • follow proper diet plan
  • eat plenty of fish and good fats
  • get moving. walk a lot.
  • drink herbal tea
  • take vitamin B and D supplements

 

Prevention is always better than cure. Being fit and healthy is the most wonderful gift that we can give to ourselves and the baby inside our tummy.
