Caffeine and Breastfeeding

When caffeine enters bloodstream, small amount will go to the breast milk. Excessive caffeine consumption will cause irritability, agitation and sometimes sleep problems to nursing babies. It’s okay to take moderate amount of caffeine (less than 300 mg a day). It takes days or even a week before eliminating the caffeine inside the body.

Caffeine is present in coffee, soft drinks, tea, energy drinks, chocolates and some over-the-counter drugs. You have to be aware on all the products that have caffeine if you wish to cut down your intake.

A baby who is said to be over stimulated with caffeine will be alert, fussy, active and wide-eyed. Limit your caffeine intake to 3 cups a day.
