Norifam: One Month Injectable Contraceptive

pinaymama · November 1, 2012 · 183 Comments

Norifam is a brand of injectable contraceptive that is effective for 1 month. Just like any contraceptive, it should be injected on the first day of your menstrual period ( first day of bleeding). You will have your regular menstruation period while using Norifam unlike in Depo-Provera (DMPA).

Contraindications:

Pregnancy or suspected pregnancy, malignancy of breast, vaginal undiagnosed bleeding, moderate to severe hypertension, arterial thrombosis present or in history, severe liver disease, cholestatic jaundice or hepatitis, hypersensitivity to any component of the drug.

Precautions:

A thorough general medical and gynecological exam should be carried out before starting the drug. Pregnancy must be excluded out. Clinical check-ups are recommended about every six months during the use of the drug.

Drug Interactions:

Anti-convulsants, barbiturates, antibiotics, anti-diabetics and insulin.

Side Effect:

Headache, asthenia, gastric upset, weight changes, nervousness, changes in libido, menstrual irregularities, feeling of tension in breasts, irregular bleeding.

Your next injection should be given regardless of your menstrual cycle at intervals of 30+/-3 days. This means minimum of 27 days and maximum of 33 days since your last injection. If you forgot to visit your OB during those days, your next Norifam injection would be on your next menstrual period.

** My 1st Norifam injection was August 25, 2012. My second shot will be November 22, 2012. I can visit my OB November 21,22 or 23 depending on my availability. If I forgot to visit my my OB on the said dates, my second shot will be on my next menstrual period.

They say that Norifam will make your skin lighter and beautiful, boobs bigger and blooming effect. I cannot attest yet since I am only on my second week.

**UPDATE:

I only used Norifam once because the 3-month injectable is unavailable at that time. For your concerns and availability of Norifam, please ask you OB-GYNE.

      Hi Inah,

What I mean is that kung hindi ako nakapagpa-inject sa binigay nyang date sakin, hindi na ko pwede magpa-inject ulit after that date. Babalik nalang ako pag malakas period ko to make sure hindi talaga ako pregnant.

I guess you are still safe naman kaya lang to make sure balik ka nalang sa center to ask. πŸ™‚

Hi. I’m only 19yrs old. Turning 20.

hi guys…ive tried having the injectables for three mos,two months and one month contraception..depot (for 3 mos) is advised when u are breastfeeding..only,it really makes u bigger..not really fat in a sense that i got bigger on the tummy partwhich may be because of the absence of menses.not to mention my shoe size to plus 1.5! ihave developed unexplainable super high fevers at 39 degrees with profuse sweating as if i had an infectuon.had hives on parts like bra strap lines, sock edges etc..plus i had bleeding for three months daily as if i were on my last day of my mens..it was so excruciating and i was tired of it all i asked my ob if i cld just take the normal pill.i was given a big no for i had hypertension.so i took the two mos injectable..it was okay except for the hives and i continued to look big on my tummy as if i were pregnant.now,i am on noristerat which.cost me 400 pesos and im hopng all will be well.ill let u guys know if id lose the hives which i jope i will.good luck to all ladies out there and i hope u have a very gud support partner in ur husbands.:)

I am currently taking Birth Control Pills, but we are deciding to transfer to Injectables kasi minsan nakakalimutan ko magtake. Upon checking, if you are taking pills, anytime pwede ka magpa inject. IS this true?
I want to try depo-provera but I discovered your post.
    What can you suggest?
    Depo-Provera or Norifam?

    Thanks much in advance.

The next day, sobra akong nahilo at nasusuka. God Bless

Now the person from the health center said wala daw side effects whatsoever ang Norifam, is there a truth to this on a case to case basis? or at least minimal side effect lang sya?

      Hello Eama,

Sabi naman nya if ever na buntis ako at nainjection-an nya ako, lalakas lang naman daw ang kapit ng bata. Wala namang masamang effect.

      Hi Andrea,

Ang alam ko mag take effect sya a week after so kelangan may protection kayo if ever na mag “do” kayo within 7 days. Yun ay kung first time mo magpainjection ha.

Of course midwife allowed to inject norifam and you don’t have to pay her. They are trained on that…. Provided you had menstruation 2 previous months before the day of administration and it should be during your first day of menatrual period and negative pregnancy test to make sure you are not pregnant….

Please know that the shot was taken August 2012. I only got it once because there is no supply of depo (good for 3 months shot) at that month.

      Hello Myra,

Sorry but I do not have an idea where to purchase Norifam in your area. Maybe you can ask your doctor about it.

      Thank you.

I already tried pills and depo. I didn’t liked depo because for the fact that I wont have my monthly period; and for the pills, I sometimes forget to take them. A friend of mine suggested that I should try NORIFAM because of the side effects. hihi
I would like to try this one since I’m very forgetful.. But the thing is, I haven’t had my period for two months already but when I got a PT, twas negative though..
So question, Can I try and get the shot tomorrow or shall I wait for my next mentrual period?

Hello, I read that Norifam isn’t widely available daw. May ask where your OB is so I can go there?
Also approximate cost of the checkup + injection? Baka di kaya ng budget πŸ™‚ thanks!

          Hi Lalaine,

Regarding your question, I had headache, changes in libido, menstrual irregularities, feeling of tension in breasts, irregular bleeding, and I gain a lot of weight.

          Thanks for asking.

So you mean its really normal? Regarding menstrual irregularities? Please pm me…

            Hello Marjon,

If you are talking about Norifam, there will be no menstrual irregularities. Tuloy tuloy lang po ang menstruation monthly since ang Norifam ay good for 30 days only. Monthly po sya kelangan iinject.

Regarding DMPA naman po which is 3 months po ang effect, dun po magkakaroon ng mentrual irregularities. Wala na po akong menstrual period a year after my first injection. That was year 2011 po. and until now wala parin ang mens.

Norifam is injected monthly. If you are planning to have your shot tomorrow, tell your OB about your concern because she knows better. You may also take a pregnancy test if you really wanna know if you are pregnant or not. I suggest you to tell your doctor that you don’t have your monthly period this month and she’ll decide whether to give you a shot or not.

Oh!! I am with Mommy Rose, the side effect is kinda worrisome but then again all contraceptives has its side effects.. my younger sister and SIL is taking pills, they didn’t opt to have the injectable because of the effect it gave to my Aunt, she had problem walking..

Living single (separated from my ex) for the last 8 years has freed me from taking any contraceptive. But even then, I only have tried pill and should I need to use protection again in the future, I may still prefer the same as I am too chicken to try any other way like injectables and IUD.

I’ve never tried injectibles though I see it convenient. I only use pills. Disadvantage though is the tendency to forget taking one.
