Parenting 101: Homework Battles

pinaymama · August 27, 2013 · 1 Comment

Elijah started schooling exactly three weeks ago. I know he is already two months late but my kid can keep up with their lessons, not to mention that his Teacher Bambi is fond of him because he knows almost everything from shapes to numbers and letters.

Elijah never shows interest in drawing nor writing. He is waaaay lazy than I thought. He is very good in memorizing but not when it comes to writing. I proved it myself when he didn’t want to do his very first homework. It says he has to write a page of big and small letter E. They are focusing on vowels, fyi. I am a very short-tempered mama so you can imagine how things were going during the time I was helping him with his homework. A total disaster! I have to treat him to Jollibee for dinner for finishing his homework.

Elijah is enjoying school but not his homework. He can spend his whole day at school but not in doing his assignment. He is doing great in school, I know that because his teacher is telling me.

Now I am thinking if homework is really that important for preschoolers/ day care. It is my kid’s first time to go to school to write, read and play and it is also his first time to be surrounded with 40 kids at the same time!  Going to school is probably overwhelming for him since after 3 years of not having kids around our neighborhood, there are these 40 kids playing and studying with him every day.

For me, scolding is unavoidable especially if Elijah is not paying attention to his homework. He knows his homework but he doesn’t want to write. You ask him about today’s lesson and he can deliver it very well but never ask him to write things down for both of you will only be having a hard time.

Is he lazy? No. Is he having difficulties in learning? No. Is he distracted? No. He just don’t wanna do it. He just don’t wanna write! Now my problem is that his teacher needs to see a written homework. Next Monday will be their exam, I am very confident that he will get a pretty high score since the coverage is only A, E, I and shapes and numbers 1-5. What bothering me is that the exam is written. I may need to ask if it;s possible for him to take an oral exam because I know he is good with that. But knowing that Elijah has 40 more classmates, I don’t think teacher Bambi will do any favor for me.

Been there… He will like it on process.. Start bribing him, although they said never bribe your kids, most of the time it works…
Bata yan eh, parang aso lng, kapag sumunod sa sinasai mo, bigyan mo ng treat…
